A Change

For those who aren’t yet following me on Twitter, an exciting/scary announcement. Exciting because it’s what I’ve essentially always worked towards, scary because I will now be completely on my own (with my amazing bands) and will be the only one responsible for my success or failure ha! There will be no love lost between the great folks at Engine Room Recordings and myself. Matter of fact I’m moving into a tiny office space right next to theirs! And of course I will be attending The Bloodsugars album release show at The Studio this Saturday at 10pm, right after I’ll be at the Living Room for Casey Shea‘s 8pm show. Thank you for all of your love, help and support through the last 6 years in NYC to help get me here, and know I’ll need it more now than ever before to spread the Family word! More exciting news soon!

Inspired by lessons learned from both Leo Babauta‘s book “The Power Of Less”, and Seth Godin‘s continued posts urging focus, I decided to further streamline this blog. The sole focus will be on my writing/analysis of music industry topics, and translating lessons learned from other industries in order to apply them to our own.

For those interested in news updates related to Family Records, my artist management/development firm, and Engine Room Recordings, where I am the head of A&R, you can continue to follow those on their respective websites instead. I will post a short summary of news updates for both here once every two weeks for those casually interested. These news updates actually relate to my writing and analysis here, and are often direct applications of the topics discussed. It just seemed better to split them up and remain focused per destination. Below is the first new summary update.

Family Records

In a crazy collaboration with Cobras, Pearl and the Beard just shot a video for their Will Smith medley. The band also was included on Amazon‘s “Folk Yeah! Indie Folk for Fall” alongside The Decemberists, Frightened Rabbit, and others.
Wakey!Wakey! just returned from a 2 week tour, and will be appearing on the CW’s One Tree Hill November 9th. More here.
Casey Shea just released “In Search Of Seas” as a free download and has been busy writing more tunes with some established Universal and Bug Music writers. More news coming!
Lacrymosa is about to start recordings her debut LP, produced by yours truly, as part of her senior project at NYU. More news soon.

Engine Room Recordings

The Bloodsugars are announcing their amazing new album “I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On” this week with their first single debuting at Stereogum. LP release Nov. 3.
US Royalty recently released their great “Midsommar” 7″, an ERR first, and it debuted digitally on iTunes. They’re on a semi-permanent tour and also just released their new music video.
Middle Distance Runner album “The Sun And Earth” will be released mid-October and they’ll be playing a ton of CMJ Showcases. Catch these guys when you can.
Porter Block just announced tour dates with Mike Doughty.

Excited to report that we just received the final master for the new Bloodsugars album, “I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On”, out this Fall on Engine Room Recordings. It sounds amazing. Can’t wait to share. This cover art is part of a gorgeous package designed by the wonderful Carolyn Wachnicki. You’ll really ‘get’ the concept when you see the back cover alongside. One of our many collaborations, and definitely in my top 3 most favorite ones yet.

A few quick tidbits:

I’m excited to say we just signed great DC-based band Middle Distance Runner to Engine Room Recordings, and we’ll be releasing their album in October. Official news soon.
I updated my discography page, so for those interested in a list of albums I’ve worked on either in a production, A&R, art direction or writing role, go here. Crazy to see how long the list has gotten now!
I just booked Nyle for an October 6th Cross-Pollination show and re-watched his Let The Beat Build video. In case you missed it the first time around, check out how awesome it is:

“Inside Family Records: The Music Man”

The lovely Kate Childs wrote an article called “Inside Family Records: The Music Man“, for which she interviewed me. It took me a few hours to forgive her for calling me a ‘thirty-something’ (technically correct since I’m 30, but emotionally disturbing). Since the Supermelon is a style and fashion oriented site I for once got to speak on something aside from music! Excerpt below, full article here.

While his daily routine might not be predictable, his go-to look for work is. In the five years since Wes moved to New York, his style has evolved into a tailored uniform that reads business not boring; urban but with a European sensibility. Button-down oxford shirts, skinny ties with a tie bar, and fitted jeans are standard form for Wes. He avoids the quirky yet ubiquitous pairing of Converse sneakers with business wear in favor of the traditional—he sticks to brown or black leather shoes for a polished look. “For the most part, I aspire to pursue a timeless look, with hints of the modern age in terms of cut,” explained Wes. “On a style level, I admire guys like Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Robert Downey Jr., and Daniel Craig.”

New Signing: US Royalty

Welcoming US Royalty to Engine Room Recordings. Upcoming is a 7″ and a digital EP called “Midsommar” due out August 25th. They’ll be playing a bunch of shows all summer (see dates below) including opening spots for Elvis Perkins and Tinted Windows.
