I read a lot and have way too many subscriptions. I love gaining new perspectives and soaking up knowledge, especially since I try to learn from every corner of different business fields in order to apply it to our own music industry corner. Every few months I re-evaluate my list of subscriptions and weed them out to only retain the ones I feel are most valuable and consistent since I only have a certain amount of time to dedicate to reading. Here’s my current list of subscriptions for the start of 2009.
Magazines:
- New York Magazine - I live in New York and feel even more connected to it by reading this magazine that captures it’s spirit quite well. Superior design and use of type, entertaining quality writing, great cross-word puzzle, and more. Easily the one with the best web presence out of all of these magazines.
- Wired Magazine – Integrates writing about technology with how it affects culture, the economy and more. Likely the best of it’s kind though popular/light-weight at times and occassionally I become more of a skimmer than a full-on reader
- GQ – Best men’s magazine out there, bar none. Great articles, amazing design/lay out and typography. One of the few magazines I read front-to-back.
- The Week – My friend Katie turned me onto this about 6 months ago and I have since devoured every issue. Cover all the news of the week in the world by quoting different publications so it gives you a full picture from all angles.
- Fast Company + Inc. – I just subscribed to these, first issue for both are on my table so too early too call.
- Interview Magazine – I nearly didn’t extend my subscription until my last issue was the recent re-design and I loved it. Often interesting and always good-looking.
RSS Feeds/Online
- Seth’s Blog – One of the best read blogs, by probably the best known marketer, for a good reasons. Always insightful. I’ve learned a lot from reading this blogs and subsequent brainstorm sessions with fellow entrepeneurs.
- Scott Adam’s Blog – Scott Adam is the creator of Dilbert and blogs about whatever strikes his fancy from politics to evolution to the concept of free will to entrepeneurship and much more. Possibly the most hilarious blogger I know of that can at the same time say some real meaningful things. Possibly my desert island blog. (Additionally, I recommend signing up for the daily Dilbert strip)
- Jay Smooth’s Ill Doctrine – One of the first legitimate voices in video blogging. Originally Jay came from a Hip Hop focus but these days he casts his web much wider.
- Hello, Romantic – My friend Megan posts her photography and interesting thought or art by others on what has become my favorite Tumblr blog. Quality + Beauty.
- This American Life Podcast – The Michael Jordan of radio shows and podcasts. Such a consistent class act, touching and inspiring. I hope to deliver quality like this in my field one day.
- Harvard’s Now, New Next Blog – Interesting and diverse business blog from the great minds in Cambridge.
- Chris Anderson’s Blog – Wired Magazine’s Editor-In-Chief muses on different trends here.
- Perpetually Human – Great Tumblr blog with all kinds of inspiring artistic expressions.
- LookBook.nu – A running collection of interesting outfits from all over the world, user-generated. Inspiring and fascinating.
- Talent Imitates, Genius Steals – Lots of interesting thoughts here.
- Noah Brier’s Blog – Noah is the guy behind a few interesting web-based ventures such as LikeMind, BrandTags and more and writes about marketing, technology and how those relate.
- BrooklynVegan – Uncompromising, completist and easily the most credible Indie music blog out there.
- Nah Right – In the end the only Hip Hop blog that really counts. The BrooklynVegan of its world.
- Church Of The Customer – Fascinating marketing and consumer oriented blog.
- Tim Ferris’ Blog – Tim wrote the Four Hour Work Week, which has been a major inspiration for me the last 6 months. He might come off a little cocky at times, but there’s lots of interesting nuggets of knowledge in there and I admire what he’s done.
- Eric Ripert’s Blog – One of the best chefs in the world, and the only one with a good blog.
- I Wrote This For You – Great writing for when I want to get my 15 year old teen angst on.
- Genius Types – My favorite personal and small business finance blog.
- Coolfer – The only Music Industry News blog I still read after I decided to only get my business and marketing inspiration from outside the music industry a few months back.
- Get Rich Slowly – My other favorite personal finance blog, and please disregard the name which makes it sound like it’s about getting rich, as it’s not.
I’m actually leaving out lots of RSS subscription here, including of course my favorite musician blogs or music blogs and other friends, but this post was getting long enough and I haven’t even touch the topic of books. For another time! Any magazine or blog tips for me to check out?
