Post-Passman

Most reactions to my mini post on Donald’s Passman’s classic “All You Need To Know About The Music Business” perhaps being less and less relevant in today’s music industry, asked the question: “Well, which books are you reading that are more relevant to strategies employed in the new and developing music business?.” Here’s a few I read in the last few months that I pulled off the shelf.

“Rules Of Thumb” by Allan Webber
“Getting Real” by 37Signals
“Blink” by Malcolm Gladwell
“Tribes” by Seth Godin
“Made To Stick” by Chip and Dan Heath
“Harrington on Hold’em III” by Dan Harrington

Yeah, I threw Passman against the wall. I should point out that’s not an uncommon reaction for me, just this week I threw “The Numerati” against the wall. It happens.

Books I’d add to the list:

UNSTUCK, by Yamashita & Spataro — like a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure for grownups with a business. Awesome tool for diagnosing group dynamic problems, and fixing them, and having fun doing it. Very exceptional stuff.

TOUR:SMART, by Martin Atkins. Best book on the music biz I’ve read by anyone. No bullshit, all hands-on details, way more useful than Passman.

THE ART OF THE START, by Guy Kawasaki. Packs a ton of info into a single book, built for .com style startups seeking venture capital but still useful for DIY music heads.

And, still waiting on Q-Tip’s book. If it’s awesome, I’ll be a happy mammal. If it’s half-assed, I’ll start writing the book it should have been.

I’m definitely going to check those out! Thanks Justin!
