Lessons Learned: Do Customers Know What They Want?

As a little follow-up to the earlier “The Audience Never Knows What You Know” post. Paul tweeted the following thought-provoking piece of marketing knowledge.

[Steve Jobs] customer-relations motto is from Henry Ford: “If I’d asked my customers what they wanted, they’d have said a faster horse.”

Major labels tend to operate via the model of duplication, because they think the customer knows what it wants: a carbon copy of other proven popular things (ie. boy band, teen girl singer, rapper talking about bling, etc.). Visionaries do the opposite and explore originality. Be a visionary.
